The Science

Why boron, specifically.

Boron is a micronutrient plants need in small quantities but cannot substitute with anything else. It's directly involved in cell wall formation, pollen tube growth, and fruit set — which is why a shortage shows up as poor flowering, blossom drop, or misshapen fruit rather than a generalized decline.

It's also one of the most mobile micronutrients in soil. Sandy, high-rainfall soils — common across much of Florida's growing regions — leach boron readily, and it needs to be replenished more consistently than nutrients that stay put.

Boron is one of the essential micronutrients plants need in small but critical amounts. While required in far smaller quantities than nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium, boron plays a specific and non-substitutable role in plant development — particularly during flowering and fruit set.

Why Boron Matters

Boron supports several key physiological processes in plants:

  • Flower and pollen development — boron is involved in pollen tube growth, which directly affects fruit set.
  • Cell wall formation — it contributes to the structural integrity of new plant tissue.

Because boron is not very mobile within the plant, a steady, adequate supply — rather than a single large application — tends to support more consistent results across a growing season.

Liquid vs. Granular Micronutrients: What Florida's Soils Change

Growers choosing between liquid and granular fertilizer formulations often find that the right answer depends less on the nutrient itself and more on the soil it's going into. In Florida, soil texture plays an outsized role in that decision.

Florida's Soil Profile

Much of Florida's agricultural land sits on sandy, well-drained soils with relatively low organic matter and cation exchange capacity.
